I walk until I get into one of those huge battles one finds themselves in after assassinating a guard while other guards watch from offscreen and attempting to move into a more advantageous position, thereby attracting more guards, unless I'm in a hurry. If I'm in a hurry I'll skip right to freerunning, and if I get into a big fight I throw a smoke bomb, then I freerun to a safe hiding place and hide until it's all clear.
