Augustine of Canterbury (died c. 604) was a Benedictine monk who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. He is considered the "Apostle to the English" and a founder of the Church of England.

Following his death, Augustine was revered as a saint and worshipped of him continued well into the 9th century, such that a group of soldiers based in the Canterbury Barracks sought to continue Augustine's work.[1]
