I am 28 in SLC and a Master Mason. There were Masons on either side of the Revolution. There are Knights Templar degrees under York Rite but remember that the church hunted down and killed Templars for heresy and destroyed massive amounts of their knowledge. Some Templars stayed loyal to the church and continued that branch for a while but much of that knowledge that was sought to be destroyed was safeguarded by certain orders and guilds. Freemasonry didn't come from Knights Templar, but they did contribute to what it is today as well as Egyptian, Greek and other mystery schools (including Eastern and India Indian philosophy) possibly even going back further than that in human history but all contributing to what Freemasonry is today. There are certain degrees that make one a Brother to Assassins, Pirates and Corsairs.
