The Freemasons are, i think, just a secret society and that's pretty much it. I believe the members always help out each other, and many authority figures like police officers, judges, mayors e.t.c have links with them or are a part of them. If one member needs something done, another member who can help will assist them.

We all know who the real life modern day Templars are, that's for sure. But you never know, maybe the Freemasons and the Templars are associated in some way...
