"When his allies find their friend strung up, they panic. You strike fast with a tomahawk. The rest fire wildly and then must desperately attempt to reload their muskets. You finish them in seconds."

First you shoot at the assassin who jsut killed the friend near you from close range, you miss and start to reload, which seems smarter then just stabbing the incoming enemy with a bayonet.
