They're a humanoid species pre-dating humans, that lived on Earth. They didn't magically come from space. They've created humans to be a servant race by genetically manipulating a pre-existing species.

This is also where your christian mythos of 'god creating man in his own image' comes from, since First Civ and humans look alike.
