Its just a good reason to show how they turned out slightly different with a sense of justice and all that. I agree with partially so even in my story(the one I'm writing) almost all of the recurring cast are orphaned. I just feel that it is a good way to learn by themselves and make mistakes and get into deep shit and them overcoming such things with their own effort and willpower as well as using their brains. However I do make it clear in the story that they required adult supervision at the crucial points of their lives or at least advice from multiple people with experience.
