Yes Anon, we are intelligent enough to understand that the history in all Assassin's Creed games is heavily manipulated but it does for the most part remain as accurate a representation as Ubisoft can make it. In each game to date, the historical time drop was just a background for the front, which was in fact; Assassins vs Templars. The cities themselves are basically a virtual replica of how they appeared at the time with some slight modifications for gameplay purposes.
