WW2 would be a very interesting setting. Think of games like the grossly underrated The Saboteur, or Sniper V2! Many people complain about machine guns and all that -- but I think such weapons, in the enemies' hands, would emphasize stealth much more than bladed weapons do in AC 1-4. Players would finally re-learn the value and importance of the Assassins' true abilities (what makes Assassins Assassins, now?), and it'd be nice for once if the entire game didn't threaten you ("you're desynchronized, because just in this particular situation, your ancestor didn't massacre 50 people to accomplish his goal")  to make you actually use stealth instead of waltzing into a herd of enemies that line up to die :P
