Pretty much this exactly, plus in many cases, bad writing contributed significantly to making him unrelatable. Remember when he and Haytham finally met, and it could have been a perfect moment for drama, but oh yeah hey turns out Haytham already knows Connor's his son so let's just skip all that? Or when Charles Lee threatens to murder everyone at the Homestead, basically the only people in the world Connor loves, and he responds with the verbal equivalent of a shrug? There's a lot of room for moments like that to be really impactful and show us Connor's character, but the writing fell on its face instead.
