Well from all the interviews that I have seen, the majority seem to be focusing more on the multiplayer elements. By this I mean it seems to be growing in importance from it's initial intro into the series. Gameplay mechanics are all well and good but the story, mystery and history are what made AC standout in the first place. Your reference to Valve in Half Life is a good point too but I hope they don't make that change in AC.
