Actually, it IS in the beginning, since Ezio doesn't have a hookblade in that screenshot. Strange, I guess this either means Leandros is not the one who actually tries to execute Ezio (possible, since the often described scene of Ezio falling with the executing guard featured a different character for the guard) or Ezio's blade doesn't break in the game, and he just upgrades it. I'm thinking that Leandros is not the guard who personally ties the noose, and after Ezio's fall, he finds and kills Leandros.
