If you don't want to get technical like Slate did cause you think its complicated, then think of it like Aita being reborn time and time again in a newborn and not forgetting what he experienced the previous time he was on the Earth. Basically a sage is simply one whose DNA code has the requirements that allow Aita's physical appearance and conscience to manifest, thus overwriting the original individual that would have his own unique traits. Its sorta like the concept of making clones and then injecting your original self into them in order to prolong your life.
