As I interpreted it from the implementation of Juno's plan, she put junk DNA code into humanity's genomes, which when triggered would hijack a fetus' genetic memories and insert Aita's own into them, acting something like a Trojan horse would do to a computer. The cost of this may be that the Sage loses the ability to explore their ancestors' memories for the overlap of Aita's.

That being said, I don't see how a Sage can see the memories of another Sage who is not related to them, and there may be no likely way of a Sage's memories being placed back into the "junk code" for the next Sage's birth.
