Rodrigo didn't seem like much of an enemy in AC:B, he seemed to be more neutral, he doesn't want to help his arrogant son, and he knows that the Assassin's can't be stopped, I think it would have been great if maybe they could have turned Rodrigo to the Assassins side instead of killing him. After his confrontation with Ezio in AC2, he seems more wise, and knows that he was wrong in AC:B. He refuses to help Cesare and says that it wasn't his idea to attack Monteriggioni. With time I think Rodrigo would have betrayed the Templars and joined the Assassins.
