you can board ships and kill everyone on board,so it also makes sense that you could take their supplies and such.there's even a special ammo type that destroys their masts so you can board.there's also the grape shot wich basically turns your cannon into a giant shotgun.fun times all around.here's an interview video with some naval combat info in it
