Actually, Connor does support the Americans as evidenced by his relationship with the big American leaders. However, he doesn't fight for them, and the Americans aren't going to be portrayed as "good" and the British as "bad." Connor's motives will be to kill Templars, on both the American and British sides, and not fight against the British.
