You aren't alone in this opinion, numerous other fans have also thought the same but there are a fair number who think otherwise. What about the time period doesn't appeal to you? I mean, one could argue that Black Flag was more of a Pirate's Creed than an Assassin's Creed game, but many found it to be very enjoyable despite the distinct lack of big explorable cities seen in ACII and beyond.
