Darby McDevitt is a creative scriptwriter at Ubisoft Montreal. He is the script writer for both the story and dialogue in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, Assassin's Creed II: Discovery, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Assassin's Creed: Embers and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. He posted these tweets which are being used as proof Watch_Dogs is non Cannon in the Assassin’s Creed universe. (According to the Olivier Garneau page in the trivia section: http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki/Olivier_Garneau the fifth reference)

In this conversation, McDevitt does say that Olivier is still MIA “AC wise” and that Olivier in Watch_Dogs was his joke.

I do realize he would know a lot more about the Assassin’s Creed series than me. However…

I personally don’t believe that this is sufficient proof.

He states it was his little joke. However, Ubisoft (or at least the creators of Watch_Dogs) went ahead with the idea. This is not really a concrete “no they aren’t in the same universe.” It is just a twitter conversation and not an official Ubisoft statement.

He made a joke but they took him seriously.

They did ask him for a crossover idea (so they obviously wanted to do a crossover).

They asked him for a crossover. He gave them one. They did it. Then he claims it is not a crossover.

I would also like to note that two Assassin’s Creed games (Rouge and Unity) have come out after Assassin’s Creed 4 and neither of them have explained Olivier’s disappearance. By now they should have come up with some sort of explanation.

AC Rouge even took place in the same Abstergo building that Olivier worked at and Melanie Lemay returned. Personally, Rouge would be the logical time to come up with an alternative story of Olivier’s disappearance. Lemay or any other employees could have mentioned if they found him or some explanation.
