Well, we don't know what bringing all three prongs together actually does yet. Presumably turn the wielder into the next Alexander the Great which would be A Bad Thing. It just so happens that the Trident still has powers when separated. You could just use a Staff in battle? Apparently not!

Exactly. The book says that if you bring all three prongs together, you will have the power to control the world and, in fact, be the next Alex (Of course that's not going to happen and the antagonist will have a horrible death) but, when they're separated, the prongs just have one portion of power. It means that the faith prong can't induce fear in the people, the fear prong won't make people love you and the devotion prong won't turn you into the next Messiah. They need to be together.

Also, it's confirmed in that book that dear Alex didn't use the Staff to battle.

I'm sorry guy that wrote the book. But it would have been better to make the Trident one of the Staves of the AC Universe (a very OP one). Because of this way, it's pretty redundant and unnecessary if you ask me.
