Yeah, they never really explained that one. Not to mention the fact that his survival ended up being pointless, given that he ended up dieing in his next appearance anyway. I'm guessing the writers wanted to bring in an antagonist Templar character to make things more personal for Charlotte, since Sanchez was the one who tagged her with the tracking device in the first place.
