I think I should reframe this policy then, as citing to any outside source, not just Wikipedia. I think people wouldn't have missed the point so much if I had done this earlier.

My proposal is just that if you take from external sources, cite it. If it's Wikipedia, cite it. If it's from Stanford University, cite it. I just thought you guys would feel even more awkward that we're citing to actual scholarly, authoritative sources as well because then we're kind of a little like Wikipedia, but it's fine in limited doses.

Basically, if you guys feel uncomfortable about citing to Wikipedia for the exceptions you're making, then by all means, cite a more authoritative, real-world source.
