They seemed random to me. Get the initiate away from the Abstergo scan ASAP seemed to be the idea, Shaun simply choose the nearest memories floating about near the one's they were studying and dropped the initiate there. It was likely both as all the Memories are from Abstergo research, the Assassin's are just hacking them to get info.
