I think it's actually a good idea to make additional Chronicles games provided that they don't use them as an excuse to never explore those settings or characters ever again.
As a matter of fact, I think it'd be a simple yet effective plan to use past Assassins that could use some more development, especially the ones who had tombs in AC2, like Amunet or Darius. Again, as long as they don't use this as an excuse to never explore those settings again, that's the key thing.
I actually enjoyed Chronicles, though that's because despite the fact I was very surprised at their encouragement of perfect stealth, that has always been how I played in all the other games. (I would literally reload checkpoint anytime someone went yellow on me o.o or the flow of a mission wasn't "perfect"). So Chronicles fit my style perfectly, and I had a lot of fun.
I think it's a good way of covering more content. See, the series has become so expansive that Ubisoft can't possibly cover it all through main games. What people don't understand is that the content of the franchise is so extensive now that they almost have to milk it once a year to cover it all, yet obviously that wasn't working out. I think therefore, it's necessary and efficient for them to channel some content into smaller spin-off games, provided that they actually have enough story and character development. This I feel like they didn't do enough with Shao Jun in China, especially since her lesson against revenge didn't make too much sense to me because even if she wasn't seeking revenge, the Eight Tigers kind of had to be stopped anyways.
Altaïr's Chronicles and Discovery had relatively good stories. The issue with the former is that they didn't explain it well enough and had serious plot holes, but it explained why Altaïr was as douchey as he was at the beginning of AC1. Discovery was superb, and though its story was straightforward, the script and voice-acting helped make the whole thing work.
