Clarification needed for death[edit source]

"Originally, Gavrani and Greer were going to carry Muller out, but once Bloodstone member Julia Gorm opened the helicopter's hatch, she instantly killed him."

This sentence needs to be revised for clarity. Does it mean that Julia shot Muller immediately? Does it mean that when she opened the hatch, she triggered an accident that got him killed (e.g. like a fire or something)? In any case, instantly is not the best word to use here.
