Æthelred the Unready
Æthelred II (c. 966 – 1016), given the epithet the Unready, was King of the English from 978 until his was dethroned by Sweyn Forkbeard in 1013, and later from 1014 until his death.
Biography
From 980 onward, England was plagued by more invading Vikings. Æthelred and several other leaders of his time, attempted to bribe the Vikings by paying them to leave. This strategy would work until 1013, with the arrival of Sweyn Forkbeard, who dethroned Æthelred and banished him from the country.[1] Although he later returned to England and regained his throne,[2] the Wessex dynasty would not fully rule England again until Edward the Confessor.[1]
