Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians
Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians (died 911), was the ruler of Mercia following the death of King Ceolwulf II. The husband of Æthelflæd, he was thus son-in-law to Alfred the Great.
Biography
After a new wave of Vikings from continental Europe landed at Kent during the early 890s, Æthelred and his brother-in-law Edward the Elder pushed them back. In 893, Æthelred's army fought a Viking force led by Hastein in the Battle of Buttington and forced them to flee into Essex.[1]
