Æscwine of Wessex

Æscwine's tomb

Æscwine (died 676) was King of Wessex from 674 until his death.

In 675, Æscwine fought and defeated King Wulfhere of Mercia for control over Sussex. After Æscwine's death a year later, he was buried in a tomb mound in the south of Essex. Sometime after his burial his hoard of treasure was stolen by a man who fled to Colcestre with them. They then hid from bandits in a cave, although he died from eating poisonous mushrooms for nutrients.
