Zeami Motokiyo (c. 1363 – c. 1443) was a Japanese actor and playwright.

Coming from a low class theater family, at 12 years old Zeyami became the companion[1] of 17 year old[2] shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, becoming able to mingle with the higher classes and get accustomed with their culture and preferences. Zeyami used his writing skill and created many plays meant to be enjoyed by these cultured people, establishing the Noh theater. These "austere, ethereal, beautiful" pieces remain as the most famous Noh plays to this day.[1]
