Asine Ruins
The Asine Ruins (Greek: Ἀσίνη) are the remains of an ancient polis in Greece. In classical antiquity the ruins were located in the Mount Koryphum region in Argolis.
History
In the 8th century BCE the city was destroyed by Argives due to the Asineans' support of Spartans in a conflict between Argolis and Sparta. Afterwards, Sparta took in the fleeing citizens of Asine, and relocated them in Messenia.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War a priest in the nearby Sanctuary of Asklepios tasked the Spartan misthios Kassandra to find a sacred white bull, and told her it could be found roaming on the mountain near the ruins. When Kassandra reached the ruins, she found they'd been claimed by bandits. The bandits had also trapped and slain the white bull, though Kassandra brought its heart back to the priest.[2]
