History

During the 15th century, Venice was a part of the Most Serene Republic of Venice (Venetian: (Serenìsima) Repùblica Vèneta or Repùblica de Venesia, Italian: Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia), often referred to as La Serenissima in reference to its title in Venetian. La Serenissima was also used as a specific reference to the Venetian state authorities. The republic itself extended to a part of North-eastern Italy and along the coasts of the Adriatic Sea.
Venice was formed from the refugees from the Hunnic and Germanic invasion of Padua, Aquileia, and Altino. Since then, Venice became a major trade and naval power in not just Italy, but all of Europe.
After failing to take control of Florence, the Templars tried to do the same with Venice, so they used the Barbarigos for it. With Venice at their hands, the Templars would have one of Europe's most powerful fleets, among others. Emilio Barbarigo was one of Venice's most influential merchants, if not the most influential. It is said that he wanted to unite all merchants under one banner, probably because the Templars would have been controlling Venice's financial power. It could have happened, but Ezio Auditore killed him, knowing he was a Templar.
Then the templars turned to Marco Barbarigo, Silvio Barbarigo and Carlo Grimaldi. Silvio was a member of the Supreme Tribunal of Venice which probably gave him influential powers. Carlo Grimaldi was supposed to make the Doge join the order. He first became one of Doge Mocenigo's closest friends, and then tried to convince him to join the Templars. Understanding he would never accept, Carlo poisoned his drink while playing chess with him. Ezio infiltrated the Palazzo Ducale, but the Doge already drank the poisoned drink. Ezio assassinated Grimaldi, but the Doge being dead, the Templars made Marco Barbarigo be the new one.
For a short period, Venice was under the Templars' control, but before they could do anything with it, Ezio killed Marco Barbarigo during the Carnevale, and Silvio Barbarigo while he was fleeing to Cyprus.
After these events, Agostino Barbarigo becomes the new Doge of the city who is not affiliated with the Templars in any way.
Landmarks
Assassin's Creed II follows its original trademark of using famous real-life landmarks. But instead of the marvels of the Holy Land, Assassin's Creed II features landmarks such as Piazza San Marco, Campanile di San Marco, the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basillica, the Grand Canal, the Little Canal, and Rialto Bridge.
The Carnival of Venice is also featured in the game, altering the environment into a more festive atmosphere. Jesters and other performers and entertainers as well dancing is added into the city during the Carnival after you reach the memory.
Basilica di San Marco
The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark (officially known in Italian as the Basilica Cattedrale Patriachale di San Marco and commonly known as Saint Mark's Basilica) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice. It is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture. It lies on Piazza San Marco (in the San Marco sestiere or district) adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace.
For its opulent design, gilded Byzantine mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on the building was known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of Gold). It is here that Ezio assassinates Carlo Grimaldi.
In Assassin's Creed II, San Marco is home to an Assassin's Tomb. This tomb can only be accessed by doing four different timed puzzles. Upon activating the switch on the floor, the player is quickly shown the route they must take to reach the lever before time runs out.
Palazzo Ducale
- Main: Wikipedia:Doge's Palace
The Doge's Palace is called the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice. Its two most visible façades look towards the Venetian Lagoon and St Mark's Square, the Piazzetta. The use of arcading in the lower stories produces an interesting "gravity-defying" effect. There is also effective use of colour contrasts.
