The Tomb of Menoikeus was a gravesite located outside the city of Thebes, and dedicated to Menoikeus, a Thebian man in Greek mythology.
During the Peloponnesian War, the tomb was claimed by a lion. When Pibos, an apprentice of Gorgias, explored the location, the lion slew him and devoured a piece of a medallion Pibos was carrying. Soon afterwards, the Spartan misthios Kassandra avenged Pibos' death and claimed the medallion piece from the lion.[1]
Trivia
- The Greek writer Pausanias visited the tomb of Menoikeus in the 2nd century AD.
