Tiber Island

Tiber Island (Italian: Isola Tiberina) is an island located on the Tiber River, in central Rome. During the early 16th Century, the island served as the headquarters of the Order of Assassins in Rome, and as a base of operations for Ezio Auditore da Firenze's war against the Borgia. While Ezio went out to undermine the Borgia's rule over Rome, Niccolò Machiavelli stayed on the island, training new Assassin recruits sent to him by Ezio. On the in-game map, Tiber Island is marked by a white Assassin insignia on a black background. The island itself consists a Bank, pigeon coop and the only four shops (Blacksmith, Art Merchant, Doctor and Tailor) with Shop Quests.

The interior of the hideout.

The building was initially owned by Fabio Orsini, but it was given to Niccolò out of Fabio's wish to gain freedom from the Borgia. Externally, the guild is a very tall but largely unassuming building, which can be entered from either the roof, the street, or the river.

Function-wise, it is similar to the Villa Auditore in Assassin's Creed II, with a few additional features. Its rooms include an Armory that displays armor sets and weapons, a Painting gallery that showcases purchased paintings and the portraits of fallen targets, and a ceremonial hall that is used to induct the Assassin recruits into the Order, and grant them the rank of Assassino. A View Point on the roof is used for the initiation Leap of Faith performed by the recruits.

The appropriate guild's crest will appear on the wall near the fireplace upon completion of any of the five Guild Challenges, and are labeled to have been awarded to Ezio in tribute to his skill.

Any recruits of the Order can often be seen milling around or speaking to each other in the rooms of the guild when not out on missions.

Interestingly, all the plain red banners around the hideout are in good condition, but the banners that show the Assassin insignia appear to be tattered and torn. We can assume that these banners have been handed down through the ages and move as often as the Assassins move to keep their whereabouts a secret. Similar banners are seen at the Villa Auditore.

Trivia

  • Oddly enough, the hideout does not have any bedrooms. There are no extra rooms or closed doors that indicate a possible place to sleep, unlike the villa. However, some small apartments may exist along the stairway leading to the top of the building.
  • Tiber Island is the only section of the map, in game, to not have Borgia guards on patrol, making it a good place for Ezio and the other Assassins to lay low during times of notoriety.
  • The Tiber Island hideout is located near the Tiber river which, if the player looks for, has a small stone arch on the edge of the island. If the player swims into this arch and waits a second an interact option will appear which will put the wet player inside the hideout.
  • The viewpoint on the roof if jumped from does not produce a Leap of Faith like in the animations, instead it goes into the Tiber river.Even stranger is the fact that only ezio can swim and any other character that falls into water would die instantly.
