Sir Thomas Gresham (c. 1519 – 1579) was an English merchant and financier who acted on behalf of the royal family, including for queens Mary I and Elizabeth I.[1]

History

In 1570, Gresham founded the Royal Exchange, having been inspired by Belgium's Bourse of Antwerp. Being the main investor, his influence was such that the building featured a grasshopper - the insect on his coat of arms - on the weathervane and a statue of him in the open courtyard.[2]

Legacy

In 1844, the building for the Royal Exchange was rebuilt (for the second time) after a fire and Gresham's grasshopper returned to the weathervane, where it has remained since.[2]
