The Sons of Niall were a set of five stone figurines carved by Niall of the Nine Hostages. Together they acted as a key to his prized treasure, the Cú Chulainn Shield. Naill did not bequeath his shield to his children for fear of causing discord so he locked it away and had it buried with him. However he did leave the stone figurines to four of his sons, with two going to Conall mac Néill on the advice of a mystic. The figurines were later buried across Ireland with five of the grandsons of Niall. The Sons of Niall were gather by the Eivor Varinsdottir and used to retrieve the Cú Chulainn Shield from Uí Néill's Rest after hearing about them from Flann Sinna.[1]
Behind the scenes
While Niall purportedly had over a dozen grandsons, the five that inherit the figurines coincide with the five mentioned in a specific graphic on his Wikipedia page.
