Thales of Miletus (c. 624 BCE – c. 546 BCE) was an early Greek philosopher, mathematician and astronomer from Miletus.

Thales was known for his research in the astronomical field, in which he recognized the important of the stars to the sailors. He was also known for his research on the Ursa Minor constellation, also known as the "Little Bear".[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, a ship designed called The Stargazer, was attributed him.[1]
