Templar agent
The agent was a Spanish Templar from Epila who served under his Lord Captain, a fellow Templar and a loyal servant to the Crown of Aragon.[1]
History
As a man of letters the agent was picked by the Lord Captain to validate some rumors among the elite of Barcelona before embarking on a mission to Italy.[2] After helping to secure supplies in Zaragoza, the agent was assigned to guard Adrià, the son of a local Catalan nobleman while in Valencia.[3][4] Upon leaving for Italy, all went to board a ship but were initially prohibited by the zealous priest Ristoro, though the Lord Captain intervened to confront the priest.[4]
Upon arriving in Italy, the entourage came into contact with some of the Templars of the Roman Rite, notably the Pazzi family, whom the agent was surprised to learn were not so readily cordial to even downright hostile towards his Lord Captain.[5][6][7] After traveling to multiple cities, officially to promote Aragonese political and economic interests but also to curry favor with the local nobility for the purpose of benefiting the Templar Order, the agent was informed of the true objective, the search of a Piece of Eden of which his young charge Adrià was believed to be able to identify and possibly even operate.[8][9]
While travelling through Italy, the company helped the Countess Caterina Sforza fortify Forlì by securing the aid of Master Engineer Gaspar de la Croix.[10] However, they not only had to deal with the schemes of fellow Templars but also ambushes from the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins. After being accosted by La Volpe in Florence, Bartolomeo d'Alviano in Ravenna, and Antonio de Magianis in Venice the agent began to believe there was a spy in their midst.[11][12][13]
Despite these setbacks the Lord Captain and his men were able to meet with Cesare Borgia and gain entrance to Rome where the agent learned the relic might be hidden.[14] After an audience with Pope Rodrigo Borgia, the Lord Captain prepared a future means of covert departure from the city with the help of Madonna Solari's courtesans. However while at the Rosa in Fiore to procure their services the retinue ambushed again by Assassins. It was here that to the agent's dismay his ward Adrià was revealed to be the traitor.[15] While both the agent and his Lord Captain survived the attack, Adrià escaped. Having been foiled in their mission to Italy, the company departed, sailing east again and arriving to the unwelcoming shores of Constantinople[16]
