Syracuse was an ancient Greek polis in Magna Graecia, the coastal region of Southern Italy extensively populated by Greek settlers.

After the victory of then-Tyrant of Syracuse Hiero at the Battle of Cumae in 474 BCE, he gave a pair of tripods to the Sanctuary of Delphi. He dedicated these to his brother to recall his brother's victory at the Battle of Himera.[1]
