Ezio, my friend! How may I be of service?

In 1503 Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Knights Templar died of poison, and with his death Rome was fully liberated from the Borgia rule. Soon after his fathers death, Cesare Borgia, commander of the Papal Army, was arrested by the new Pope, Julius II. In 1504 Cesare was exiled to Spain and imprisoned at the Castle of La Mota, Medina del Campo, from which he escaped and joined his brother-in-law, King John III of Navarre.

The Siege of Viana

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, in 1507 Ezio Auditore, now the Grand Master of the Assassin's Order, travels to northern Spain to finally kill his greatest nemesis, Cesare once and for all. Cesare, who had previously been exiled to Spain, commandeered John III of Navarre's vast army, even though Cesare was under John's service at the time.

When Ezio arrived at Viana, the battle had already begun, as soldiers fought outside and within the town's walls and cannons destroyed parts of the town and castle. Ezio made his way through the small countryside region outside the town's walls and upon entering the warzone he made his way through the chaos, killing those who challenged him, until he eventually found Cesare, and the two of them faced off.

Confronting Cesare

In the story trailer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio and Cesare are seen confronting one another, standing on opposite sides of the town's wall and remaining silent for a moment, staring each other down. Suddenl

y, a cannon ball crashes into the walkway of the wall and Ezio quickly emerges from the smoke and dirt, running toward Cesare with his Hidden Blade at the ready. Cesare, thinking quickly, drops his sword and grabs Ezio's arm before he could stab him with the hidden blade, and both of the men struggled to get leverage over each other. The two nemesis' climatic battle had begun.

Trivia

  • In the story trailer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Ezio is seen at the Siege of Viana wearing no armor, yet when there is a closer view of Ezio he is wearing armor. This is only a small error that can easily be overlooked, and will not happen to the player when the cutscene is played in the game.
  • Although the Siege of Viana is where Cesare Borgia died in actual history, there is very little recorded information on the event, and is somewhat a historical mystery in terms of the outcome and important specific details, such as the amount of troops involved, and who fought against each other.
