Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet FRS (1788 – 1850) was a British politician who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, twice as Home Secretary. He is most famous for developing the concept of modern policing.

In 1829, Robert Peel founded the Metropolitan Police Service with the Metropolitan Police Act.[1] He decided that its headquarters would be located in the vicinity of Scotland Yard. With the main office backing onto Great Scotland Yard, the police force later became metonymically known as "Scotland Yard".[2] Although Londoners were initially apprehensive of this new system of civilian law enforcement, fearing that it would infringe on their privacy, it proved to be successful in drastically reducing crime in the city.[1]
