The rat (Rattus) is a domesticated species of rodents. Rats are generally thought of as vermin, spreading diseases and often turning into a plague.

During the 1st century BCE, many rats scowered Egypt for food and locations for nests. A lot of rats were encountered in Alexandria and the surrounding villages, walking freely through streets.

During the French and Indian and American Revolutionary Wars rats often walked around in Boston and New York City, sometimes squished by people stepping on them.
