The Porta Aurelia is a landmark in Rome.

History

It is located near the top of the hill of Gianicolo, and its first building may date back as early as the end of the Republic, when a small residential complex "trans-tiberino" was enclosed in a small wall. Later formed the southern summit of that sort of triangle that the city built by Emperor Aurelian in 270 performed on the hill climbing.

Database entry

This gate of the Mura Aurelianel resides on the summit of the Janiculum and was the starting point of the Via Aurelia. Renamed Porta San Pancrazio after Pope Urban VIII remodelled it in the 17th century, the Via Aurelia served as Rome's connection to France during the Republic and Middle Ages and therefore was extremely important for trade.
