"I'm reliving the life of Bernard Kenway, sheep farmer. Yeah. I'm literally shoveling virtual shit all day."
―Philippe Chartrand on his Sample 17 subject, 2013.[src]

Phillipe Chartrand is a researcher working for Abstergo Entertainment. In 2013, he was assigned to study the life and memories of Bernard Kenway, father of the – in Philippe's eyes – decidedly more exciting pirate Edward Kenway.

Over the course of their employment, a new colleague discovered emails sent between Chartrand and another employee, Jennifer Tam, while hacking Abstergo Entertainment computers; over several days, the two discussed the research analyst, Edward and Bernard Kenway, and the "cute barista" working in the building lobby.

As the email exchange followed on, both Jennifer and Philippe became increasingly anxious about the rash of hackings throughout Abstergo Entertainment, and the company's aggressive response.
