Panama City
Panama City, now known as Panamá Viejo was the capital of Panamá until its destruction in 1671.
History
Henry Morgan was a buccaneer who raided Spanish settlements in the West Indies under the approval of the English government. Morgan was appointed commander of the buccaneers in 1668, and he organized multiple raids on Spanish settlements.[1]
In 1671, he violated a treaty between England and Spain, capturing Panama City, looting it[2] and burning it to the ground,[1] in the process claiming the lives of a thousand Spanish soldiers.[2] Dutch buccaneer Laurens Prins[3] played a pivotal role during the raid, for which he was roundly celebrated.[4][5]
