Biography
Early life
Having both Frankish and Moorish ancestors, Oisel was born during the mid-9th century CE in Anjou, in the West part of Francia. When his mother worked as the accountant of a lord, Oisel was regularly warded by the washerwoman Rosalie. His father, who traveled in many countries, taught him many languages, Greek and Arabic among them. When he was seven years old, Oisel received a pierced coin from his father, keeping it as a lucky charm around his neck.[1]
Later, Oisel was inducted in the Hidden Ones, a secret organization fighting for the liberty of the people. He was trained by the nun Mahaut, the leader of the bureau of Chinon. As all Hidden Ones, Oisel severed his ring finger to prove his commitment to the Brotherhood and received a Hidden Blade. He became friends with two fellows Hidden Ones, Matthias and Aline. At some point, Oisel adopted an eagle he named Alouette.[1]
Travel on the Silk Road
Letter from Levant
After a mission, Oisel went in Chinon to wash his outfits. He once again met Rosalie who he did not recognize at first. Even if she proposed to wash his robes, Oisel refused as she could see the blood on it or the hidden pockets. After washing his clothes, Oisel met Aline and Matthias. The three Hidden Ones ran to the Bon Berger, an inn that served as the bureau of the Hidden Ones. After the race, a drunken customer attacked Oisel and his friends. After defeating the drunkard, the group was joined by Mahaut who accompanied them to the dovecote above the inn.[1]
The nun showed to Oisel a letter sent by Basim Ibn Ishaq, the leader of the local Hidden Ones in Constantinople. As Basim informed Mahaut that he discovered a conspiracy of the Order of the Ancients in Antioch, Oisel was chosen with Matthias to travel in Levant while Aline was sent in Scandinavia to learn the language of the Norse people due to the Viking expansion. While his friend shared their last day together, Oisel met the butcher Gwen who kept Alouette who was wounded. Taking his healed raptor, Oisel navigated the Loire with Matthias to go to Nantes, and from there, boarded a ship to Lisbon and then Antioch, crossing the Mediterranean Sea for weeks.[1]
After arriving to Antioch, they found the city overruned by a military presence, with no traces of the Hidden ones being there present. Through a series of puzzles and clues they manage to meet with a group of Egyptian Hidden Ones; Rashid, Kalim, Sihem and their guide, Jessamyn. Jessamyn explains that they were the only ones, together with the two Franks, who answered Basim's call for help. Jessamyn then offers to lead Oisel and Matthias to Basim, who is in a caravanserai outside the city.[1]
Finally, Oisel and Matthias meet Basim, who explains the emergency situation that prompted him to ask for help from the brotherhoods of Egypt and France. Basim suspects, although he doesn’t have proof, that the Snake-Eaters may be a group affiliated with the Order of the Ancients. During the meeting, Hytham also appears and informs Basim that the Roman Brotherhood cannot send help. Basim therefore decides to send the six young Hidden Ones who have answered the call to eradicate the plague of the Snake Eaters along the Silk Road, whereas he will return with Hytham to Constantinople, where other challenges await.[1]
The start of the Road
The six Hidden Ones infiltrate a caravan led by a certain Kazem, from whom Oisel learns the rudiments of the Sogdian language, which he already partially knows thanks to his father's teachings. Later on, the Hidden Ones manage to obtain some information on the Snake-Eaters thanks to the confession of a thief, a former merchant reduced to poverty by the military organization. The man says that the Snake-Eaters force the merchants to pay taxes and to stop only at their caravanserais. The group, which comes from the East, has a base in a fortress on the Silk Road.[1]
During a night sortie, Oisel, Matthias and Jessamyn engage a patrol of Snake-Eaters and take a prisoner. From the latter they learn various information about the Sogdian people and the Snake-Eaters. They learn that the nake-Eaters are a group of Sogdians who had united a decade earlier to make the Road secure. They are currently led by Dunya, the granddaughter of their founder, with the aim of monitoring progress, guiding it during specific times and in specific places. Obtaining this information, the six Hidden Ones head to the fortress of the Snake-Eaters, with Jessamyn and her group providing cover for Oisel and Matthias to infltrate the fortress. Once inside, Oisel and Matthias confront Dunya. The woman reveals that the goal of the Snake-Eaters is to control the Silk Road to maintain order in the world and lead it gradually towards progress, choosing times and ways to provide wealth and knowledge.[1]
In the clash with the leader of the Snake-Eaters, Oisel loses Alouette, killed by Dunya, and is forced to flee the fortress, leaving his friend Matthias to deal with the woman.[1]
The Desert
Oisel, who managed to escape from the fortress of Dunya, wanders through the desert, certain of the death of Matthias, in search of his companions in Alexandria. Tired and wounded, first he finds himself facing the attack of wild dogs, then he meets a mysterious woman who offers him a drink and, finally, he finds shelter from a sandstorm inside an ancient tomb, where he comes into possession of a strange armor. That night, Oisel dreamt of Aline and discussed with her the righteousness of Mahaut's behavior and, more generally, of the Brotherhood, which acts for the good but with questionable means.[1]
After a long wandering the next day, Oisel finds his companions, discovering, however, that Matthias is not with them. The Alexandrians reveal that they have discovered that the Snake-Eaters are actually linked to the Order of the Ancients. With this information, the five Hidden Ones depart hastely to Chang'an.[1]
Chang'an
The group of Hidden Ones reaches Chang'an, at the far east of the Silk Road. The multitude of red banners around the city suggest to the group the strong presence of the Order here. While exploring the city, Oisel is stopped by a trio interested in his armor which, in their opinion, appears to be "neither from here... nor from there". He is thus taken to the villa of a noblewoman who has a drawing of the motifs adorning the armor. After meeting with the noblewoman, Oisel left the village.[1]
Together with his companions, Oisel improved his gear, gathered allies and planned a way to storm the castle where Dunya resides. Together with the people of Chang'an, the Hidden Ones stormed the castle of the Snake-Eaters, and Oisel went to personally killed Dunya, where he encountered Matthias. After the death of Dunya and the erradication of the last remnants of the Snake-Eaters, Oisel, along with his fellow Hidden Ones, founded a bureau in Chang'an, recruiting members from the population and from those who stormed the castle alongside him. After several months running the bureau, Oisel decided to head west back to Francia.[1]
Behind the scenes
Oisel is a old French word meaning "bird", derived from Late Latin aucellus, contraction of Vulgar Latin avicellus, diminutive of Latin avis.
