Nathaniel Greene (1742 – 1786) was an American military officer who served under Commander-in-Chief George Washington in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was with the army in the winter of 1777–17778 when they were encamped at Valley Forge. Thousands were dying from starvation, cold, and diseases due to the lack of food and poor housing, and Greene was appointed as quartermaster to help remedy this situation. In this capacity, he was chiefly responsible for procuring supplies and delivered on this job sufficiently for the army to emerge strong enough for battle the following spring.[1]
