The Nanban Temple

The Nanban Temple was a Christian church situated in Kyoto in Yamashiro, Japan.

History

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke ventured towards the temple to find an old friend and Jesuit priest Luís Fróis. Finding him at the adjacent residences, Yasuke met with Luis and asked him to translate a clue,[1] which he found from Portuguese Templar Duarte de Melo's belongings after assassinating him[2] The letter spoke about the Templars, whom Luis recalled from the stories of the House of Borgia, other houses, and the Pope being part of the organization.[1]

While translating the note, Luis told Yasuke that Duarte de Melo was corresponding with another operative, Kimura Kei, who was gathering an army of samurai in Kii under the orders of Nuno Caro. With this, Yasuke admitted that he knew Caro from his past but spoke no more of his past in front of Luis. Knowing where his next target is, Yasuke bid farewell to Luis before leaving.[1]
