Mount Vesuvius (Italian: Monte Vesuvio) is a volcano and a famous naturally occurring landmark located near the Italian city of Naples.

History

Arguably one of the most fabled volcanoes in history, Vesuvius destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum when it erupted in 79 CE, both of which were never rebuilt. Since that catastrophe, it has erupted three dozen times.[1]

By 1499, Il Bruto, a mercenary employed by Armilia Guardato, had a hideout in the hills below Vesuvius. While attempting to recover a shipment of weapons stolen by Armilia on the Templars' behalf, a team of Assassins led by Claudia Auditore traveled to the hideout based on a lead from the thief Piero,[2] and witnessed an argument between Il Bruto and Armilia. Following the latter's departure, the Assassins confronted and defeated Il Bruto, who gave them the location of Armilia's warehouse in Naples in exchange for his life.[3]

Today, Vesuvius is still considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, as over 3 million people live within range of a major eruption.[1]
