"We are always trying to think of new ideas for players to get around the city in cool and efficient ways; so here Ezio uses a merchandise lift, allowing him to travel up many stories almost instantly."
Jean-François Boivin, E3 Brotherhood Walkthrough.

Merchandise Lifts were devices that consisted of a rope and pulley system, which allowed one to travel quickly from street level up to the rooftops.

Each lift was made up of a rope attached to a suspended weight, which stretched from ground level to the pulley at the top of a beam. The rope was held in place by a lever that, upon release, dropped the weight, and allowed one to grab onto the rope and be pulled to the top of a building.

Lifts could be found in Rome, and in Renaissance or modern Monteriggioni. However, using a lift caused the weight to shatter, and rendered the lift unusable.

Lifts also worked as Chase Breakers in Abstergo Industries' Animus training program, for the use of their recruits. The lifts in the program functioned in the same manner, however, the weight would not break upon being dropped, and would instead slowly rise back into position. The lift would become available to others in roughly 3-5 seconds.
