mercenaries are one of the 3 factions that help Ezio, theives courtesans (prostitutes), and merceneries. the idea of hiring mercenaries is they help you in battle, fighting your enemy. 

The Mercenaries are much like the brute's,as they have heavy weapons such as battle axes and claymores.
